The biggest challenge in the steel pipe market lies in the sustainability of the product (scope 3 as Van Leeuwen does not produce pipes itself). As a leading distribution company, we engage in dialogues with our chain partners regarding this matter.

Van Leeuwen as the green distributor

Distribution is our core business, and our ambition is to be the green distributor in our global markets. Transportation to our customers is part of scope 3, as we mainly rely on external transporters. However, we strive to play a leading role in the supply chain. In terms of sustainable transportation, we focus on rail or water transport instead of road transport and keeping stocks closer to the customer. We also pay significant attention to greener distribution methods by using trucks running on HVO100. Through our distribution partner, Lensveld, the distribution in the Netherlands is already fully carbon-neutral.

Martijn van Eck: "As a leading distribution company, it is our ambition to be at the forefront of our markets as a distributor of sustainable pipes. We can only create a sustainable future when, from cradle to gate, we work together on this and jointly take action. At Van Leeuwen, we actively embrace our role as a partner in the supply chain.

Van Leeuwen as the supplier and chain partner in sustainable pipe and tube

As a leading partner in the supply chain, we engage in dialogues with suppliers and customers regarding the sustainability of steel pipes. Since we do not produce pipes and pipe materials ourselves, our products (similar to our distribution) concern scope 3. Martijn van Eck, European Procurement Manager, plays a key role in our contacts with suppliers. He states, "In close cooperation with our suppliers, we explore possibilities for producing and stocking pipes with a significantly reduced or ultimately neutral CO2 footprint, for example, by reusing materials and sustainable production facilities." Soon, our Zwijndrecht location will stock the first ArcelorMittal X-Carb pipes, which are produced with considerably reduced CO2 emissions. We are also working with supplier Benteler Steel to establish a stock of seamless pipes with a reduced CO2 footprint.

Furthermore, we cooperate with our customers to explore the application of these pipes and related aspects such as certifications and calculations. By offering sustainable pipes to our customers, we contribute to reducing their own carbon footprint and help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Joop Sassen: "Our goal is to further invest in this area and procure green energy where necessary, so that we can provide all of our branches in Europe fully with green electricity by 2025."

Achieving net-zero operations in scope 1 and 2 by 2025

We prioritize reducing the emissions of our own activities, known as scope 1 and 2 emissions, as these are areas where we can have direct and the fastest impact. Our highest priority is to achieve carbon neutrality by making full use of renewable energy, electrifying activities, and optimizing processes.

Van Leeuwen has already invested over 5 million euros in green energy generated from solar panels on its own roofs. Solar panel installations have been placed on our roofs in the Netherlands, Germany, and Romania. This year, solar panels will also be placed at our locations Malaysia and Australia, as well as the new office in Vaihingen, Germany.

Since September 2022, the trucks of distribution company Koninklijke LV Logistics (Lensveld), which has been providing transportation services for Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht for decades, run on HVO100 renewable diesel as fuel.

With a total surface area of 23,500 m² of solar panels, Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht generates enough electricity to power all of its locations in the Netherlands and Belgium with its own green energy. Solar panels have also been installed on our roofs in Germany and Romania in 2022.
