The event was attended by a prominent delegation from ArcelorMittal at our headquarters, where the cooperation was officially kicked-off. The transparent data of the CO2 reduction of XCarb® steel tubes are independently verified and documented in a so-called EPD certificate (Environmental Product Declaration).

To reduce the CO2 footprint of these products, renewable energy sources are employed in their production. The CliMore product from Benteler Steel/Tube is manufactured using the electric arc furnace, resulting in up to a 75 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the production of new steel from iron ore in the traditional blast furnace.

XCarb®

On July 12, 2023, we received the very first steel tubes made of carbon reduced material at our warehouse in Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands: the XCarb® tubes from ArcelorMittal. This is the result of a strong cooperation with ArcelorMittal Tubular Products, making Van Leeuwen the first distributor of these innovative and environmentally friendly steel tubes.

Andreas Schmidt, Managing Director of Van Leeuwen Germany and Austria is pleased about the agreement: “As an internationally active family business with an almost 100-year history we assume our responsibility for the environment, people and society. We want to be a pioneer, when business within the value-added chain should be done in a more sustainable way. With tubes made of CO2-reduced steel, we are on the way to climate neutrality.“

CliMore

In Germany, on November 8, 2023, the first truckload of CO2-reduced hydraulic pipes from the new CliMore product label by Benteler Steel/Tube arrived at our warehouse in Duisburg. On the same day, the Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group and Benteler Steel/Tube signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the supply of seamless cold-drawn pipes made of green steel.

The delivered tonnage includes hydraulic piping tubes used in large agricultural and construction machinery within the hydraulic segment. These tubes must meet high standards.

“As leading company in the industry, Van Leeuwen takes its responsibility to enhance sustainability and to enable its customers to do the same. It is our ambition to be the most sustainable pipe distributor in our industry. Therefore, we work together with strong partners like ArcelorMittal to offer tubes with a low CO2 footprint to the market.”

Van Leeuwen has stocked steel pipes with lower CO2 emissions in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. This development marks a significant step in our sustainability efforts and contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. It underscores our commitment to environmentally conscious business practices and our involvement in the fight against climate change.
