Van Leeuwen consequently is facilitating companies in this area as well. We not only supply hydrogen pipelines for transporting hydrogen, we also supply a complete range of pipes, fittings and flanges for new hydrogen production plants.

For example, Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht has started making deliveries to a large project to expand the existing underground hydrogen pipeline network in the Netherlands. The expansion covers a total distance of 32 kilometers and Van Leeuwen is supplying the necessary pipes, including coating. René Viskil, Project Manager: 'A decisive factor for the customer was that Van Leeuwen meets all project specifications, and, even more important, that we are able to provide interim storage on the pipe yard at our branch in Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands. This enables the customer to call up just-in-time deliveries to the contractor’s depot.'

The project has since been started up and the first deliveries were completed entirely accordingly to plan. René Viskil: 'We are proud to be able to carry out this work in the Netherlands in our own backyard as it were, and are convinced we can carry out similar projects in this segment for customers over the coming years.'

Hans Weerstra, Member of the Executive Board: ‘Hydrogen is one of the new markets Van Leeuwen is focusing on. We expect considerable growth in this segment in the coming years. Together with our supply chain partners – such as mills, customers and standards institutes – we are going to undertake initiatives, for example to establish uniform specifications. Van Leeuwen has already realized the first successes and we also expect to acquire downstream projects in this segment in the near future. Hydrogen plays an important role in the energy transition. On the one hand this development, for example, will impact our automotive business which will be replacing the combustion engines for which we supply parts, but on the other hand we are also seeing some great opportunities.’

The energy transition is a hot topic and hydrogen is increasingly mentioned as a fuel that has the potential of playing an important role in this transition. Many companies in the traditional oil and gas industry are currently researching the opportunities inherent in hydrogen for their company.
