Ruud Langeveld, Managing Director Global Project Organization
"With the Global Project Organization, Van Leeuwen is more than a material supplier, we are a strategic project partner.”
At an integrated complex in Johor, Malaysia, a new biorefinery is under development to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Supporting the transition to lower-carbon aviation; the facility will deliver up to 650,000 tons of SAF, biodiesel and bio naphtha annually.
Van Leeuwen contributes to this landmark project through a strategic frame agreement, working closely with international engineering partners. Coordinated efforts through our Global Project Organization, operating across our entities in China, Malaysia and Singapore ensure reliable supply and execution.
The scope includes carbon steel seamless pipes, as well as a full range of fittings and flanges in carbon steel, low alloy and stainless steel. This demonstrates Van Leeuwen’s capability in complex, multi-regional projects.
Traffic management technology continues to evolve, but one element remains unchanged: the structures supporting it must remain solid and reliable.
With GS Birkhoff Staalwerken as a construction specialist and Van Leeuwen as an international partner in tubes, knowledge and logistics, we are building safe and future-proof infrastructure together.
GS Birkhoff Staalwerken has been at the forefront of reuse for many years. A distinction is made between new gantries and renovation gantries. In these renovation projects, existing structures are dismantled, modified (extended or shortened) and reinstalled. With more than 6,000 road gantries in the Netherlands, this represents a significant number of projects.
When Henk van den Ochtend (Managing Director) took over the company in 2006, GS Birkhoff Staalwerken developed into a leading specialist:
“We are often involved in complex challenges that require specialist expertise.”
To support tight project schedules, Van Leeuwen operates a Customer Dedicated Inventory (CDI). This ensures that seamless and welded hollow sections and tubes are always available, meet the stringent requirements of Rijkswaterstaat (Public Works and Water Management), and are delivered on time.
Henk van den Ochtend highlights what sets Van Leeuwen apart as a supplier:
“The way you work together matters. You make realistic agreements and think along for the long term. It’s not just about the lowest price, but about mutual trust and cooperation. When something is needed, you solve it together.”
Today, around 70% of their activities are focused on road gantries. The tubes used in these structures must withstand extreme conditions: wind loads, fluctuating temperatures, heavy traffic and, in some cases, temporary overload during maintenance work. The service life of a gantry exceeds 70 years.
Installation is strictly regulated and may take no longer than 15 minutes. This makes it a highly complex logistical and technical operation, especially considering the size of some structures. The largest gantry built by GS Birkhoff Staalwerken measured 84.5 meters in length.
GS Birkhoff Staalwerken is not only active in road infrastructure projects. The company is also involved in the chemical industry, working on complex structural applications such as pipe bridges, supports and extensions of existing installations. Their core strength lies particularly in the engineering phase.
Steel road gantries above highways are an essential part of the Dutch infrastructure. They provide signage, traffic management and safety. Behind every gantry lies craftsmanship and a strong chain of reliable partners. For GS Birkhoff Staalwerken B.V., a specialist in this field, Van Leeuwen has been a trusted partner for decades, ensuring continuity and reliable deliveries. This is essential in projects where margins are tight and deadlines are strict.
