Status

The system has an impressive scale. The machine will span a length of 315 meters and is connected to all pipe storage locations in the warehouse in Zwijndrecht. The system transports pipes and bundles up to 13 meters long at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour across the warehouse.

The Monorail brings efficiency to logistics by reducing crane handling and internal transport. Moreover, the system minimizes the chance of errors, contributing to reliable deliveries. Thanks to its fast operation, the capacity can be significantly increased. Additionally, the system offers advantages in terms of sustainable employment as the pipes are accessible at working height for the operator.

Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht is taking a significant step forward with its investment in a Monorail system within the warehouse. The Monorail is a fully automated sorting system for pipes, serving as a link between the pipe storage and the distribution center where the pipes are loaded. Picked pipes will be automatically transported to the correct loading location.

The project started in the summer of 2022.

The Leading Specialist
  • In May 2023, five new overhead cranes were delivered, which will be used for loading trucks. Additionally, three old overhead cranes (with the steel structure still in good condition) were completely overhauled to be used again as new.

  • Several teams are working hard on ensuring the proper integration of the machine within Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht, focusing on IT, processes, and personnel.

  • The expected commissioning of the machine is in the fall of 2023. The go-live will take place in phases to ensure optimal service to customers during the transition phase.

  • Space has been cleared in the warehouse for the construction of the foundation and the machine. In total, 3,600 tons of inventory were relocated.

  • In March 2023, the construction phase of the floor, serving as the base for the machine, was completed
    Here are some figures on the construction of this foundation floor:
    o   Floor area: 6,500 m²;
    o   550 foundation piles consisting of tubular pipes with a total length of 12.5 km;
    o   280 trucks were used for the supply of concrete;
    o   180 tons of reinforced steel were used to strengthen the floor.

  • In April 2023, the machine supplier began its assembly. The steel structure for the rail has already been completed.
