The many faces of heavy wall tubes

Customer requirements are also evolving. Short delivery times and high availability remain important, while expectations regarding quality, documentation and traceability continue to increase. At the same time, customers increasingly look for products that have already been processed to their specific requirements. By combining our extensive stock range with technical expertise and processing services, we can help customers meet these requirements.

“What makes heavy wall tubes so interesting is the enormous variety of dimensions and wall thicknesses. It's a product that may not look like much, but offers countless possibilities once it's processed.”
Dieter Hamm, Product manager

For many customers, however, the tube is only the starting point. Heavy wall tubes are often mechanically processed into specific components. Van Leeuwen can support this with services such as sawing, drilling, milling, honing and bevelling, as well as other machining and processing options. Combined with logistics solutions, Just-in-Time deliveries and project management, we can supply more than just the raw material.

At first sight, a heavy wall tube may not be the most exciting product in our portfolio. Its surface can be rough as a result of the manufacturing process and, in many cases, the tube still needs to be machined before it becomes a finished component. But despite its relatively simple appearance, heavy wall tubes offer a wide range of possibilities.

Heavy wall tubes combine high strength and stability with thick walls and a high load-bearing capacity. Depending on the material and design, they can withstand considerable pressure, tensile and bending forces. This makes them suitable for demanding and safety-critical applications, from hydraulics and heavy machinery to cranes, offshore, energy, construction and mechanical engineering.

One of the main advantages of heavy wall tubes is the wide variety of available dimensions and wall thicknesses. Van Leeuwen offers a broad and deep stock range, with it’s central stock located in Duisburg, Germany and outside diameters extending up to 711 mm. Several grades are available with triple certification, combining E355+N, S355J2H and P355N TC1 in one tube. Hot-finished mechanical steel tubes in E470 are also part of the range, while CO₂-reduced steel tubes are available through our VL Impact offering.
